Jason JonMichael is a Senior Strategist at the Highly Automated Systems Safety Center of Excellence (HASS COE). Previously, he served as an Assistant Director for the City of Austin, where he developed and opened the city's first Smart Mobility Office focusing on economic development, policy, public-private partnerships, placemaking, mobility services, parking, and travel demand management. Jason is a transportation technology expert with more than 30 years of experience in transportation and other government technology sectors. He has experience in connected, automated, and electric vehicle research, deployment, program development, communications, and operations across all state and regional government subdivisions. Jason started his career in ITS launching his own MBE company as a certified fiber optic technician in 1991, when the advent of optical fiber communications entered the DOT world. From there, his career progressed up the OSI Stack and outward to user experiential learning and adoption. Prior to joining the City of Austin, Jason led public-private partnerships focused on emerging technology program development, management, and deployment in transportation as the National Technology Leader for HNTB Corporation. Jason has performed and managed systems integration services on projects spanning from traditional advanced traffic management systems to state-of-the-art, emerging smart mobility solutions involving connected, autonomous, shared, and electric technologies. He regularly provides insights and advice to industry-related non-profit boards, councils, committees, and other organizations. From 2006 to 2023, Jason had been an executive board member and past Chair of the OmniAir® Consortium, helping guide the creation of its global certification services in connected and autonomous vehicles. Jason received a B.S. in Environment, Engineering, and Management from the University of Georgia.
